About This Project

Oddlings are small, whimsical characters that begin either on the pottery wheel or as hand-built forms before being altered by hand. With their oversized eyes, bright colours, and slightly goofy expressions, each Oddling develops its own personality somewhere between the clay, the glaze, and the kiln. These are a few of the Oddlings I created for the annual spring sale with Fairview Studios. Some are minis that don’t begin as wheel-thrown forms, while others start on the wheel and are later altered by hand.

Around this time I began naming the Oddlings. I wasn’t yet writing the names down though, so I only remember two of them. Marlo is the lovely blue lady with the purple hairdo, and Gloria is the singing speckled lady in the back of the second image.

This batch was also when my glazing style for the Oddlings really started to settle in. They remained brightly coloured, but I began pulling back from busy glaze combinations in favour of solid, vibrant colours. The simpler surfaces allow the personality and character of each Oddling to take centre stage.
